The employability brief usually reaches a department in one of two forms. Either the placement cell requests two hours a week for training, or the management asks the department to “focus on industry readiness” and leaves the mechanism unspecified.

Both land on a timetable that is already full, taught by faculty already carrying administrative load, in a semester already short of contact hours after examinations and events.

The predictable response is a bolt-on: a soft skills module in the seventh semester, a guest lecture series, an add-on certification. These are not useless. But they are separate from the thing students spend eighty per cent of their academic time doing, which is coursework.

The more efficient intervention is not additional teaching. It is changing what existing teaching asks students to produce, and how it is judged.

None of what follows requires a new class, a new subject or a syllabus revision. All of it operates inside the discretion a faculty member already holds over assessment.

Students Practice What Is Assessed, Not What Is Said

A department can state repeatedly that industry values problem-solving and communication. If the assessment scheme rewards reproduction of notes under time pressure, students will optimize for reproduction of notes under time pressure. They are behaving rationally.

Assessment is the only instruction that carries a consequence, which makes it the only instruction that reliably changes behavior.

This is why assessment redesign, rather than syllabus redesign, is the highest-leverage move available to faculty. The syllabus specifies what must be covered. It rarely specifies the form in which understanding must be demonstrated.

Make Every Assignment Produce Something a Student Can Defend Later

Most coursework produces artifacts that die at submission — a handwritten record book, a printed report copied from three sources, a set of outputs with no statement of what was attempted or why.

The same academic content can be assessed through a deliverable that survives.

Consider the difference. A conventional assignment: implement the given algorithm and submit the output. A redesigned version: implement it, state the constraints you assumed, show a case where it fails, explain the trade-off you chose and why, and record what you would do differently with more time.

The technical content is identical. The second version produces a student who can answer an interviewer’s follow-up question, because they have already been made to answer it once.

Extend the same principle across disciplines. A management case analysis that requires a stated recommendation and the two assumptions it depends on. A laboratory experiment that requires an error analysis rather than a tabulation. A commerce assignment that requires the student to explain what the reconciliation revealed, not merely that it balanced.

The interview does not ask what you were taught. It asks what you did, what went wrong, and what you decided. Coursework can ask the same three questions at no additional cost in contact hours.

The Viva Is Already an Interview — Conduct It Like One

Every department already runs vivas. Most of them consist of definitional recall: state the theorem, define the term, list the steps.

Interview panels do not work that way. They probe. They ask why you chose that approach, what would happen if a stated condition changed, whether you can explain it to someone outside your discipline, and what you would do if your first answer turned out to be wrong.

Restructure the viva to mirror that pattern using the same duration and the same syllabus. Three questions are enough: one that asks the student to explain a concept in plain language, one that changes a condition and asks what follows, and one that asks the student to justify a choice they made in their own submission.

Add one practice that most vivas omit — tell the student, in thirty seconds, what was weak in their answer. Feedback is what converts an examination into preparation, and it is the element students almost never receive.

Faculty who do this consistently report the same secondary benefit: it becomes obvious very early which students have understood and which have memorized, which is diagnostic information the department would otherwise receive only after the placement season.

Name the Industry Equivalent of What You Teach

A student who has studied normalization does not necessarily know that this is what a data engineering interview is asking about. A student who has studied hypothesis testing does not necessarily connect it to how a product team evaluates a change. A student who has studied inventory models may not recognize the same problem in a supply chain operations role.

The vocabulary gap is real and it is cheap to close. It costs roughly two minutes per topic.

When introducing a concept, state where it appears in professional work: the role that uses it, the tool or system in which it is implemented, and the form in which it typically shows up as an interview question. Not as career advice — as context for the material.

Over a semester this accumulates into something students cannot get from a training module: a map between their syllabus and the job market, built by someone who understands the subject.

Set Documentation Standards and Grade Them

Written communication is repeatedly identified by employers as a weakness in fresh graduates, and it is almost never assessed in technical departments. Reports are graded on content; presentation is either ignored or reduced to formatting compliance.

A modest, enforceable standard changes this. Require a short abstract that states the problem and outcome in a specified word limit. Require assumptions to be listed separately. Require sources to be cited in a consistent format. Require every figure to have a caption explaining what it shows rather than what it is called.

Allocate a defined share of marks to these elements and apply it without exception. The share does not need to be large. It needs to be certain.

Students who have written thirty such documents across three years enter the workplace already able to produce the artifact their first manager will ask for. Students who have not will learn it in their first six months, under observation, while being evaluated.

Use Peer Review, and Assign Roles in Group Work

Two structural additions cost almost no faculty time and change behavior substantially.

The first is peer review. Before submission, each student reviews another’s work against a short published checklist and submits written comments. Reviewing is a distinct skill from producing, it is central to professional engineering and analytical work, and it forces students to read a standard critically rather than only comply with it.

The second is role assignment in group projects. Undirected group work reliably produces one student doing the work and the others attaching their names. Assign named roles with individual deliverables, rotate them across the term, and assess each role separately. The collaboration becomes real because the accountability is individual.

A Redesign Sequence for One Course

This does not need to be attempted across a department at once. Take one course you teach next semester.

  1. List every assessment in the course and what a student must physically produce for each.
  2. Convert one assignment so that it requires a stated assumption, a documented failure case and a justified decision.
  3. Rewrite the viva question bank so that half the questions probe reasoning rather than recall.
  4. Publish a one-page documentation standard and attach marks to it.
  5. Add one peer review cycle before a major submission.
  6. Name the industry equivalent of each major topic when you introduce it.
  7. At the end of term, ask the placement cell whether students from this cohort answer differently.

Six changes, one course, no additional contact hours.

Employability is not a subject that was left out of the syllabus. It is a property of how the existing syllabus is taught and examined, and the people holding that lever are already in the classroom.
