A B.Com graduate wants to work in technology. The advice they usually receive is to learn to code.

Sometimes that is right. Frequently it is the least efficient route available, because it ignores the qualification they already hold and starts them from behind in a field where computer science graduates have a four-year head start.

The more effective approach to a non technical to IT career starts from the opposite direction: which technology roles specifically benefit from the domain knowledge you already have?

Several do. Some of them pay better than entry-level development.

Technology Is Not Only Engineering A software company employs engineers. It also employs business analysts, implementation consultants, quality analysts, technical writers, product operations staff, customer success managers for technical products, data analysts, and compliance specialists.

In most technology organizations, engineers are a minority of headcount.

Many of these roles are harder to fill with computer science graduates than with domain specialists who learned the technical layer.

That is the opening.

Routes That Use Your Existing Degree Commerce and accounting backgrounds. Financial systems implementation is a persistent shortage area. Someone who understands double-entry accounting, GST, and reconciliation and can then learn an ERP platform becomes valuable quickly — because teaching accounting to a developer is harder than teaching software to an accountant. Related routes: financial data analysis, audit technology, fintech operations, revenue operations.

Management backgrounds. Business analysis is the natural entry — requirements gathering, process mapping, stakeholder management, translating business need into technical specification. Also product operations, implementation consulting, and project coordination.

Life sciences and pharmacy backgrounds. Health information systems, clinical data management, pharmacovigilance systems, medical coding, and regulatory technology. Domain knowledge here is a hard requirement and cannot be substituted.

Arts, humanities and communication backgrounds. Technical writing, UX research, content operations, product marketing, and customer education. UX research in particular rewards training in observation and interviewing.

Law backgrounds. Data protection and privacy operations, contract technology, and compliance roles — a growing area given obligations under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 and its rules.

The Technical Floor You Do Need None of these roles require you to be an engineer. All of them require you to be technically literate enough to be taken seriously.

The realistic minimum:

• SQL. Being able to pull your own data changes what you can do in almost any of these roles. • Excel at a professional level, including Power Query. • Understanding how software is built — what an API is, what a database does, what happens when a user clicks a button, what a release cycle looks like. • One visualization tool — Power BI or Tableau. • AI tool fluency as a general working capability. • Clear written communication, which in these roles is a primary deliverable rather than a supporting skill.

That is a few months of deliberate effort, not a second degree.

Why Domain Knowledge Is Genuinely Scarce The reason these routes work is worth understanding, because it should inform how you position yourself.

Technology organizations building products for a specific industry — finance, healthcare, logistics, education — consistently struggle with the translation layer. Engineers understand systems. Customers understand their domain. Someone has to sit between them.

That role is filled by people who understand the domain and have learned enough technology to communicate with engineers. Not the reverse, because domain knowledge takes years to acquire and technical literacy takes months.

Your degree is not an obstacle to a technology career. In several roles it is the part that cannot be taught quickly.

Positioning Yourself Properly The most common mistake is applying as a weaker version of a computer science graduate. That framing invites an unfavorable comparison.

Position instead as a domain specialist with technical capability.

Not: “B.Com graduate learning Python, seeking IT role.”

But: “B.Com graduate with accounting and GST knowledge, SQL and Power BI capability, seeking financial systems analyst roles.”

The second states something a computer science graduate cannot claim.

Build Evidence at the Intersection Portfolio projects should sit where your domain meets the technology, because that is your differentiated position.

A commerce graduate should build a financial analysis dashboard, an automated reconciliation, or a GST reporting tool. A pharmacy graduate should work with clinical or inventory data. A management graduate should map and analyze an actual business process end to end.

Generic projects erase your advantage. Intersection projects demonstrate it.

A Realistic Six-Month Path • Month 1: Excel to professional level, including Power Query. • Month 2: SQL until joins and aggregation are automatic. • Month 3: Power BI or Tableau, first dashboard published. • Month 4: Software fundamentals — how applications work, APIs, databases, delivery cycles. AI tool fluency applied to your domain. • Month 5: Two intersection projects, documented. • Month 6: Domain-specific certification if the target role expects one, applications, interview practice.

Entry compensation in these roles is often comparable to entry-level development, and progression can be faster because the talent pool is thinner.

The route into technology is wider than it appears from inside a non-technical degree. It just does not run through learning to code.
